Round 4 Match 1 Results: Melbourne Storm 17 v St George Illawarra Dragons 4

In Melbourne’s first home game of the season they showed punters why they should never be bet against when playing at Etihad Stadium, as they systematically destroyed the early premiership favourites, the Dragons.

As impressive as St George had been previously this season, they had never come from behind to win. And this week, they were outclassed by Melbourne, unable to fight back from a deficit scoreboard.

It was a try-less first half as both teams showed respect for each other and matched each other in defence. After Cameron Smith kicked a penalty goal in the 18th minute and then one again on the half-time siren, awarded for Dragons’ high tackles, Melbourne went to break leading four to nil.

Five minutes into the second half, Dane Nielsen scored the first try of the match for the Storm who then gained unstoppable momentum as the Dragons’ defence began to waver.

Four minutes later winger Anthony Quinn scored again bringing the score to 16 to nil.

St George knew they had to do something and do it quickly and so in the 55th minute winger Jason Nightingale scored the Dragons sole points of the game.

It wasn’t enough, however, to even put a dent in the Storm’s surge as genius fullback Billy Slater got over the line for Melbourne in the 67th minute and then Cooper Cronk’s 72nd minute field goal took their final winning score to 17 – 4.

Slaters’ try, set up from a sensational and unforgettable no-look pass from Cooper Cronk was the highlight moment of the match.

The victory saw Melbourne become the new premiership favourites at $4.50 with Ladbrokes.com.au and the Dragons’ drift to $5 second favourites.
