Round 4 Match 3 Results: Cronulla Sharks 11 v Parramatta Eels 0

Easter Saturday’s opening match was the upset result of Round 4 when the Sharks, coming off a near record breaking succession of loses, scored a shock win against the Eels at Toyota Stadium. Worse still for Parramatta, Cronulla stopped them from putting any points on the board in what was surely the Eels’ most embarrassing defeat in a long time.

For NRL punters who stuck by the Sharks, you would have been rewarded with a very juicy pay out, which just goes to show you never know in the NRL!

It seemed the return of Tim Smith, playing his first match for Cronulla against his old club, was just what the Sharks needed to give them the confidence to get back into the game and with an double for winger Blake Ferguson, Cronulla managed their first win for 2010.

Throughout the first half both teams failed to put any points on the board in an error-ridden series of plays, and the 13,000 plus crowd who braved the rain were left with a nil all scoreline going into the break.

But five minutes into the second half, Ferguson scored his first of two tries giving them a four point lead. Ten minutes later Ferguson was at it again, stunning the spectators and the Eels with the Sharks second match try.

Five minutes later Tim Smith, who had failed to convert the Sharks two tries, kicked a penalty goal giving them a 10 – 0 lead and then he put the icing on the cake kicking a masterful field goal in the 81st minute.

The Eels nearly scored once Gorothe got over the line, but the pass from Jarryd Hayne leading up was ruled forward.

It will be back to the drawing board for Parramatta who have a lot of work to do if they are to make the Grand Final for the second year in a row.
