NRL Round 8 – Match 1 Preview: Brisbane Broncos v Newcastle Knights

The opening game on Friday night shows just how tricky it will be to pick a perfect 8/8 this round, as two teams that have been very inconsistent this season, the Broncos and the Knights, face off at Suncorp Stadium.

Both have lost five and won two of their seven matches so far this season, and both are playing on the back of Round 6 losses.

Surprisingly though their odds are not as close as you would think, with the Broncos installed as the clear $1.50 favourites with while the visitors sit at $2.65.

The Broncos showed a lot of improvement last week when they lost 36 – 18 to the Bulldogs. They were really in there for about 65 minutes of the game but just need to work on staying driven right up to the last minute and not letting the other team get too much momentum on them.

Newcastle, however, played pitifully when they went down in the shock loss of the week, defeated 26 – 6 by the Sharks.

This week the Broncos do have the home ground advantage, however all the fuss surrounding Israel Folau and whether he will move over to Union at the end of the season may throw them off their game.

Folau will announce his decision Friday afternoon, mere hours before they play the Knights, and what will be in the back of many fan’s heads is Brisbane’s devastating 56 – 0 thrashing by Canberra last year a few days after then star-player Karmichael Hunt signed over to the AFL.

But if they can stay focused, use the positivity of the crowd and keep Lockyer out of harms way they should be able to hold off the uninspiring Knights.

Current Head-to-Head Odds: Broncos $1.50 – Knights $2.65
