NRL Round 17 – Match 3 Preview: Canberra Raiders v Sydney Roosters

A great Sunday afternoon of footy starts at Canberra Stadium, with the Raiders hosting the Sydney Roosters.

The Chooks have managed to just hold onto a top eight spot on the ladder, despite a hit and miss season and their 18 – 20 loss to the Warriors last week. This is a very important game for the Sydney club, who need a victory to stay in finals contention.

The Raiders, currently in 12th spot, were also beaten last week when they went down 18 – 10 to the struggling Bulldogs. Losing at home last week, their third consecutive defeat, will have done little to boost the confidence of Canberra coming into Sunday’s match.

They had their explosive fullback Josh Dugan back last week, but it still wasn’t enough, so how they will go against the Roosters is questionable.

This week Canberra loose Dave Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs to Origin, while the Roosters have Nate Myles and Mitchell Pearce away at Origin camp also, which evens things up somewhat.

Without Myles and Pearce, two of Sydney’s strongest, and playing down in a chilly Canberra, the Roosters will start on Sunday as the underdogs. currently have them at $2.35 while the Raiders are paying $1.60 for a win at the moment.

Even though the Roosters may have acclimatised to the cold conditions somewhat after playing their ‘home game’ in Christchurch last week, the Raiders are sure to have worked on the things that let them down last week and will be on the ball for this one. A close game that will go in favour of the home side.

Also look out for how Carney handles the pressure of the playing against the club that dumped him. Maybe he will be fired up enough to storm the Roosters to a surprise win, and the footy god knows they need it if they are to make a run at the finals. Now is the time Sydney have to string some wins together, but it looks less and less likely as they haven’t been able to make it back-to-back victories since the opening two rounds of the season.

If you aren’t confident in who to back, why not go for an exotic bet with on the winning margin being in the 12+ range seeing as there has been over 24 points between these two in their past eight matches.
