The action of Round 17 continued on Sunday afternoon when a confident Roosters side travelled to the country’s chilly capital to defeat the Raiders 22 – 12 at Canberra Stadium.
Following their comprehensive win, the Chooks have moved up to the seventh spot on the ladder while the Raiders look to have little hope of a berth in the finals after dropping down to number 13 thanks to their fourth consecutive loss.
Sydney started as the underdogs on Sunday, but soon showed shortened in the betting markets with a dominant first quarter display.
Roosters’ halfback Todd Carney, playing against his old side, was fired up and ready to play some footy, opening the visitor’s account in the 12th minute after intercepting the ball and running 80 metres to score. He then converted his own try to give the Roosters a 6 – nil lead.
Just two minutes later Sam Perrett got in on the action and scored Sydney’s second, but Carney missed the kick and so they lead by 10.
In the 22nd minute Joel Thompson got the Raiders’ first four-pointer, converted by Jarrod Croker to make it a two point margin.
Then despite their flashy start, the Roosters fell behind the eight ball when Joel Monaghan got over again for Canberra in the 36th minute, the conversion giving the home side a narrow 12 – 10 lead going into the break.
Back from the second half Sydney fought back in style scoring two more tries while stopping the Raiders from putting any more points on the board.
First Shaun Kenny-Dowall scored a converted try in the 54th minute, and then to add some gloss to the final score Jake Friend was given the benefit of the doubt by the video refs to score the Roosters’ fourth in the 67th minute. Carney converted again and the Chooks came away 22 – 12 in front.
