NRL Round 18 – Match 5 Results: Newcastle Knights 21 v 10 Cronulla Sharks

The Newcastle Knights begun their last grasp run to the finals with an important 21 – 10 win over the poor-performing Sharks at Energy Australia Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The victory was the Knights’ third in a row and they are now in 11th spot on the ladder, just two competition points out of the top eight, while Cronulla look well and truly beaten in the competition sitting in the 14th position.

The Sharks started swimmingly with an early benefit of the doubt try by centre Ben Pomeroy in the 7th minute, converted by Luke Covell to lead by six.

But a rapid response had the Knights opening their account in the 13th minute with five-eighth Ben Rogers scoring a four-pointer after some fancy footwork, the try converted by skipper Kurt Gidley to tie the score six all.

Matt Hilder scored Newcastle’s second in the 22nd minute after latching onto a pass from Zeb Taia who had run 40 metres down the field with Hilder in support; Gidley’s second conversion pushing them in from 12 – 6. The home side took this lead to the sheds as no more points were scored in the first half.

The Knights started the second half with a quick early try by Junior Sau just two minutes in after the Sharks’ Paul Gallen was penalised for stripping the ball, Gidley missing this one so they added four points to their growing lead.

Some errors from the Sharks gave Newcastle more of an advantage as they were awarded two fourth-quarter penalties in the 63rd and 71st minutes, Gidley booting both through the posts so they lead by a comfortable 20 – 6.

Cronulla’s only other points came from a 72nd try by winger Luke Covell, but he missed the kick and so it wasn’t enough to slay the Knights, who capped things off with a Jarrod Mullen field goal from 30m out on the full time siren.
