NRL Round 19 – Match 1 Results: South Sydney Rabbitohs 13 v 16 St George Illawarra Dragons

The Rivalry Round got underway on Friday night when the St George Illawarra Dragons held onto their spot at the top of the ladder with a close 16 – 13 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium.

Fresh off a bye the Dragons won their sixth game from their past seven, atoning for the defeat they suffered at the hands of the Panthers back in Round 17.

Now on 30 competition points, four clear of their closest rivals, St George Illawarra look in a better position than ever of claiming the Minor Premiership for which they are the favourites at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Punters that bet on the Rabbitohs to ‘Make the Top 8’ at Ladbrokes.com.au are now hoping for a turn around after South Sydney dropped down into ninth spot after the loss, their second in as many weeks.

The Bunnies got off to a good start on Friday night when Roy Asotasi scored the opening try under the posts just five minutes in so punters betting on the ‘1st Tryscorer’ at Ladbrokes.com.au were answered quickly. Chris Sandow made the first conversion and the home side held an early six point lead.

Then in the 27th minute the Dragons’ flying Brett Morris opened their account scoring in the left corner, but Jamie Soward missed the kick and they still trailed by two.

In a gritty first half no more points were scored, so St George went to the break two points down.

Back from the break it was the Bunnies who were first to score again when five-eighth John Sutton, who was engaged in an entertaining head-to-head battle with rival five-eighth Jamie Soward all match, got over in the 47th minute. Another good kick from Sandow went through the posts to extend their lead 12 – 4.

In a gallant second half performance the Dragons showed their determination and answered the critics that said they couldn’t come back from a deficit.

Starting their winning comeback in the 51st minute Jason Nightingale scored a converted try to close the gap to just two points, which they were able to find with a 60th minute penalty.

Jamie Soward kicked the penalty to tie the score 12 all with 20 minutes still left to play.

With things looking awfully close, Rabbitohs’ goal kicker Chris Sandow went for a field goal, successfully booting it through in the 64th minute to push them a point in front.

Moving into the final 10 minutes, returning star Mark Gasiner scored the winning try for the Dragons when he got over in the 71st minute so the visitors won 16 – 13. Playing in the centres for St George, Gasiner proved his worth in just his second game back after a stint playing Union.
