NRL Round 20 – Match 2 Results: St George Illawarra Dragons 10 v 11 Gold Coast Titans

There’s a new field goal king in town! On Friday night veteran Mat Rogers kicked the first field goal of his glittering 10 year NRL career to give the Titans a narrow golden point victory over the Dragons at WIN Jubilee Stadium.

After a gritty showdown between the competition leaders and a Gold Coast outfit desperate to stay in the top eight, Friday night’s match moved into golden point extra time with Rogers kicking the winning drop goal to undo the Dragons 11 – 10.

The narrow win paid well for punters that bet on the Titans to win by 1 – 7 points at Ladbrokes.com.au

A loss would have seen the Titans drop out of the top eight for the first time this season, but they held on in another determined performance, putting an end to their three game losing streak to move up to the seventh spot on the ladder.

The great early season wins by St George has seen them stay in the top spot despite losing two of their last three games.

On Friday night the conditions were perfect for an upset as the two teams played in the rain. The Gold Coast, playing on gallantly without injured rep stars Greg Bird and Ashley Harrison, got off to a great start when Anthony Laffranchi scored the opening try just three minutes in.

It was a controversial try as Laffranchi obviously was short of the line, but the Dragons’ Jeremy Smith made contact with the ball during the tackle, the momentum pushing it in-goal and the video refs awarded the try.

Scott Prince booted it through the posts and the Titans were in front 6 – 0 after four minutes.

The only other first half try went to the Dragons when Ben Creagh scored a four-pointer in the 23rd minute, Jamie Soward’s conversion tying the score at six all.

A couple of mistakes by the Gold Coast then gave the Dragons the advantage as St George received two penalties in their favour. Both times Soward kicked for the points showing how close the game was. He was successful with both kicks giving the Dragons a much needed four points so they took a 10 – 6 lead into half time.

Moments before half time St George nearly extended their lead further when Matt Cooper crossed the line, but the video ref awarded it a no try, denying Cooper his 100th NRL try.

In the second half it was more of the same testing conditions, both teams struggling for dominance.

Kevin Gordon scored the only other try of the match for the Titans in the 53rd minute, Prince missing the conversion so the score was tied again at 10 points apiece.

A number of failed field goal attempts by both sides, where is that Benji Marshall when you need him, saw the score locked after 80 minutes and the thrills continued into extra time.

Neither team could come up with a deciding play in the first five minutes of golden time, so it looked as though the first draw of the season would be the result.

Moving into a final five minutes, both teams were looking desperate. Then, with less than 50 seconds to go, Rogers made a sneaky move from dummy-half to kick the match winning field goal from 10 meters out for the Titans after 90 minutes of extreme footy.
