NRL Round 22 – Match 4 Results: South Sydney Rabbitohs 34 v 30 Wests Tigers

In the upset win of the round an injury-ridden Rabbitohs were able to rise above thanks to a stunning debut by centre Dylan Farrell and beat the Tigers by four points in a golden point extra time thriller at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

Farrell scored a hat-trick in his debut first-grade game including the match winner in the 91st minute to give the Rabbitohs the marvel victory.

South Sydney have moved up to ninth spot on the ladder and are just two competition points outside of the top eight thanks to the close win.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are still having a solid season and look set to be here come September despite the loss, still in fifth spot.

It was an intense, fast flying and high scoring thriller on Saturday night with the first points of the night coming just two minutes in when the Tigers Blake Ayshford got over.

The Rabbitohs answered back in the 14th minute when debutant Farrell scored their first try of the night and the first of his career.

Chris Sandow converted and the home side were two points in front.

Before the second half was over, however, the Tigers got in two more tries to give them a seemingly comfortable lead by the break.

First Robbie Farah scored in the 24th minute and then Lote Tuqiri got over 10 minutes later, Benji Marshall converting both with ease so they were in front 16 – 6.

In the second half it was more of the same great action with the Rabbitohs winger Fetuli Talanoa scoring a minute back into the match after Beau Ryan batted a ’40-20’ kick back into play, the conversion bringing them within four points.

Then Wests scored two more tries within 10 minutes, one each to Chris Lawrence (44th minute) and Keith Galloway (49th minute) with Marshall successful twice more.

Leading 28 – 12 it was hard to see the Tigers giving away the win, but that is exactly what they were forced to do thanks to a determined effort by the Bunnies.

Scoring another four unanswered tries while also dominating in defence saw South Sydney push the game into overtime.

Farrell got his second in the 53rd minute followed by fullback Rhys Wesser (65th minute) and five-eighth John Sutton (77th minute), Sandow’s three successful kicks and a Marshall penalty kick back in the 60th minute tying the score 30 all.

After an incredible 11 minutes of overtime, Farrell finally found the line for a third time and the Rabbitohs snuck in with a narrow victory to resurrect their season.
