The Knights handed the Bulldogs a big loss and their official season end on Sunday afternoon when Newcastle scored a big 30 – 6 victory over Canterbury at Energy Australia Stadium in front of 17,300 fans.
Now in 10th spot on the ladder after winning two on the trot, the Knights still have a slim chance of making the finals and their fans aren’t giving up on them just yet.
The Bulldogs, however, have been handed their exit card for the season as Sunday’s loss saw them drop down to 13th on the ladder and well out of contention.
Newcastle totally dominated the match from go to whoa scoring five tries to the Doggies sole effort.
Halfback Kurt Gidley opened the home team’s account just six minutes in with the Bulldogs doing little in the way of defence to stop him.
Kurt Gidley was the first tryscorer rewarding punters who had backed him through Ladbrokes.com.au
He was followed in the first half by fullback Shannon McDonnell (24th minute) after an Adam MacDougall break, and Issac De Gois (30th minute) scoring a try each.
Gidely kicked three from three and the Knights were well in front 18 – nil by half time.
Just two minutes back from the break Newcastle again asserted their dominance when Cooper Vuna scored their fourth of the night off a Junior Sa’u grubber and then before Canterbury even got a look at the line veteran Adam MacDougall scored another in the 60th minute.
Another two successful kicks by Gidley extended the Knights lead to 30 – nil and there was little the Dogs could do.
Benjamin Barba scored one consolation try for the visitors in the 68th minute that Bryson Goodwin converted to give them their only six points.
