NRL Round 22 – Match 8 Results: Canberra Raiders 30 v 26 Penrith Panthers

Round 22 concluded with a Monday night thriller between the Raiders and the Panthers, with Canberra able to use the home ground advantage to defeat Penrith 30 – 26 after trailing by more than two converted tries at half time.

The Panthers are very lucky to still be in second spot after the last month that has seen them lose four of their past five games, but now have no real chance of stealing St George’s Minor Premiership title.

Meanwhile, Canberra still have a narrow chance of making the finals now in 11th spot on the ladder.

On Monday night the Raiders were first to score through centre Joel Monaghan in the eighth minute, the try converted by Jarrod Croker so they were in front by six after the first 10 minutes.

The visitors were quick to answer with hooker Kevin Kingston opening the Panthers account in the 16th minute, Michael Gordon’s kick tying the scroe six all.

Raiders boom fullback Josh Dugan, returning from injury, then got in with their second just four minutes later and the Green Machine pushed in front 12 – 6.

But three quick tries and two penalty kicks for Penrith gave the visitors a good lead heading into the break.

First second rower Frank Pritchard scored in the 24th minute and then Sam McKendry backed up with another just four minutes later.

Winger Brad Tighe completed the first half stunner with a 34th minute try, Gordon kicking two from three as well as penalties in the 36th and 40th minutes so Penrith took a 26 – 12 lead to the sheds.

But in a sensational second half comeback for the home side, the Raiders scored three converted tries one each to Daniel Vidot , Bronson Harrison and Terry Campese to steal a narrow 30 – 26 win.
