NRL Round 23 – Match 2 Results: Cronulla Sharks 18 v 12 Sydney Roosters

In the shock result of Round 23 the struggling Sharks managed to outscore the in-form Roosters in a Toyota Stadium stunner on Friday the 13th.

Cronulla, fighting against the Cowboys to not finish last of the premiership contenders this year, exposed the weaknesses of the Sydney side that had been hailed as one of the top chances to win this year’s Grand Final.

Following the loss, the Chooks have dropped from their third spot on the ladder down into fifth and need to step up their game if they are to finish in the top four by the end of the season.

Any fan that bet on the Sharks through at their juicy odds enjoyed a massive win!

It was an unpredicted arm wrestle of a first half with no points scored until the six minutes from half time.

After a gritty 30 minutes the Sharks were the first to open their account with a Ben Pomeroy try in the 34th minute converted by Luke Covell.

Pomery was excellent when intercepting a Mitchell Pearce pass to get the scoring underway.

Just three minutes later the Roosters fought back and Braith Anasta scored, Todd Carney kicking it through the poles to tie the score six all.

Then in the 40th minute Shaun Kenny-Dowall gave the Chooks an advantage heading into the break scoring their second converted try so Sydney lead 12 – 6.

But back from the break Cronulla scored two more tries, one each to Dean Collis and fullback Nathan Gardner in the 55th and 68th minutes, and kept the Roosters scoreless in the second half to run away with a shock victory.

It was the second time this season the Sharks got the better of the Chooks after Cronulla previously thrashed them 42 – 18 back in Round 13 emerging as Sydney’s bogey side.
