It’s here! State of Origin next week has seen our first split round of the 2013 NRL Telstra Premiership with just the four games to play out this weekend making.
Don’t think that it’ll be easier tipping a perfect round with the four games however with Origin depleting some of the big teams in the comp of their star players forcing them to really explore their rosters.
Upset Tip: Knights $2.80 to embarrass the Origin-depleted Bunnies ($1.45) on Saturday night
NRL Teams with a Round 12 Bye are:
- Sydney Roosters (3rd)
- Parramatta Eels (15th)
- Penrith Panthers (8th)
- Melbourne Storm (2nd)
- Cronulla Sharks (7th)
- Wests Tigers (16th)
- Manly Sea Eagles (4th)
- Canberra Raiders (11th)
That leaves us with eight teams, some of which will be happy to play some representative player depleted clubs and others that are the representative player depleted!
Round 12 kicks off tonight with the Canterbury Bulldogs hosting the St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium, home to Game 1 of the State of Origin next Wednesday night.
The 10th placed Doggies have work to do over the next couple of weeks to get back into Top 8 contention as they are missing just one player to Origin with Josh Morris (NSW).
They are a week between games and enjoyed a confidence boosting 24 – 14 win over the Broncos last week aiding their cause and will start favourites after St George copped a nasty 19 – nil hiding from the surprising Panthers in Round 11.
On Saturday ANZ Stadium gets another run with the current competition leaders the South Sydney Rabbitohs out to prove they can survive Origin without G.I., Te’o and McQueen.
They play the fifth ranked Newcastle Knights which looks the round’s blockbuster.
Bunnies suffered a shock 14 – 12 loss at the hands of the Sharks last Monday so play without a few heroes, are on the short back-up and could be down in confidence.
Knights meanwhile also lost last week 28 – 12 to the Warriors, but back in Sydney they should be back to their best even without Gidley and Boyd.
Sunday arvo’s game is a Queensland derby at Skilled Park with the sixth placed Gold Coast Titans after another win after thrashing the Eels 42 – 4 last week playing the out of sorts North Queensland Cowboys.
The NQ crew are another that lose some instrumental players to Origin most notably their skipper Thurston and the always honest Brent Tate.
Lost to the Wooden Spoon favourites the Wests Tigers 22 – 20 last week and look to be in trouble this season for some unexplainable reasons.
Things finish up Monday night at Suncorp Stadium with the Brisbane Broncos taking on the New Zealand Warriors.
Brisbane we’re sure would have been praying for a bye here with all their big players out of action either to Origin (think Thaiday, Hodges, Parker and Gillett) or injury (Reid).
NZ may be hit and miss but last week’s win over the Knights was a cracker and surely without any Origin losses these guys can get the better of Brisbane despite the NRL odds saying the opposite.
