It’s week 16 of the NRL Telstra Premiership and it’s also State Of Origin week meaning there’s some fired up fans, some tiered rep players and possibly some upsets on the cards.
Upset Tip of the Week: Dragons ($2.35) to beat the Panthers ($1.63) on Saturday night
After Queensland set up a do-or-die decider for Origin III thanks to their easy victory over the Blues at Lang Park on Wednesday night the standard matches this week may look at little flat in comparison.
But that’s no reason not to tune in!
With the finals only 10 weeks off we’re heading to the end of the season where every competition point counts. Every try, every penalty, every tackle and line-break all count.
Round 16 kicks off tonight in Sydney with a top clash between the table topping South Sydney Rabbitohs hosting the eight-placed Canberra Raiders desperate to stay in touch with a finals bid.
The Bunnies are in flying form and come off an easy Sunday win beating the Eels 30 – 10.
Canberra meanwhile were beaten by the Wests Tigers Saturday night and shouldn’t be too much trouble for their better fancied rivals tonight.
The other Friday night footy clash sees the Tigers take on the Melbourne Storm.
Storm have their big three backing up from Origin and will be desperate to atone for their 18 – 12 loss to the Titans last Monday night.
Will they be tired enough for the Tigers to post another upset? Probably not.
Saturday’s headliner is the Gold Coat Titans going to Hunter Stadium to play the Newcastle Knights.
Titans are fifth on the ladder after their victory over Melbourne but they travel for this one.
Newcastle meanwhile need to break a winning drought and a top eight spot isn’t too far off as they sit ninth and have a home ground advantage here.
A couple of Sunday matches see the Brisbane Broncos take on an in-form New Zealand Warriors outfit at Mt Smart Stadium.
Kiwis have won four on the trot but will that same team show up this week? No one ever knows but with Brisbane possibly playing without some of their Origin stars it looks likely the Warriors will get five.
Another representative-rich team from the Sunshine State on a mission this week is the North Queensland Cowboys who finally got a win on the board after some very dark days when they defeated the Dragons 22 – 16 two weeks back before a bye.
Can they do it again over the Cronulla Sharks who are also coming off a bye, before which they enjoyed a confidence boosting 32 – 14 victory over the desperate Parramatta boys.
This week wraps up Monday night with the Sydney Roosters playing the Manly Sea Eagles in what promises to be another thriller.
Third play fourth on the ladder respectively in this block buster which we are tipping to go down to the wire, Manly just defeated by two against the Bulldogs two weeks back before the bye while Sydney beat Canterbury last week by two – flip a coin.
Teams with a bye this week are then the Parramatta Eels and the Canterbury Bulldogs.
