We’re now officially half way through the regular 26 round NRL Telstra Premiership 2014 season with Round 13 taking place this weekend.
Back to a full eight game card after the disruption of the State of Origin opener, there’s plenty to love about the line-up over the next few days starting with a couple of Friday night crackers.
Upset Round 13 Tip: Bulldogs ($2.15) to beat Manly ($1.73) Friday night
Firstly we have a top-of-the-table clash between the current No. 1 ranked Canterbury Bulldogs and the third-placed Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval.
Manly got their feathers in a flutter after Brisbane well and truly showed them who was boss at Suncrop last Sunday afternoon, the visitors going down 36 – 10.
They’ll be out to atone then when playing the Doggies who are fresh off a bye.
Canterbury’s stunning winning streak came to an end in Round 11 when, without their halves combo, lost 32 – 12 to the Roosters.
They’re back to full strength here (almost) but are still the underdogs against a classy Manly outfit that will take some beating.
But they can be beaten.
- Tip: Bulldogs to beat Manly by 12
The other Friday night feature sees the North Queensland Cowboys (11th) play the Parramatta Eels (7th) at Pirtek Stadium where the visitors are slight favourites.
They might be away from home but the boys from NQ handed it to the Storm 22 – 0 so should have their confidence, and more bounce after Origin, back this weekend.
Parra meanwhile suffered a nasty 38 – 12 beating by the Panthers a week ago without Jarryd Hayne, the Blues’ star fullback returning this week to help his boys atone for their 42 – 14 loss up in Townsville when these two met back in Round 8.
Even with the Hayne plane back out of the hangar, and the Eels at home, the Cowboys are being kept safe in better for a reason.
- Tip: Cowboys to beat the Eels by 4
The second team on the NRL Ladder, the Penrith Panthers, then play in the Saturday arvo opener taking on the Gold Coast Titans who have dropped out of the top eight down into 10th after losing three on the trot.
They got a freshen-up last week but off a Round 11 loss to the Warriors and will be hoping to get their season back on track and stay in touch with the semis playing at home here.
They’ll have to pull out the stops though with the Panthers after their fourth straight win, their most recent effort being the all-too-easy trouncing they gave the Eels last Friday night.
- Tip: Penrith to beat the Gold Coast by 14
The other team in the top four, the South Sydney Rabbitohs also plays on Saturday as favourites against the in-form New Zealand Warriors with both sides coming off back-to-back wins.
Warriors handed it to the Knights (38 – 18) last week while the Bunnies also ran off with a 29 – 10 victory over the Dragons.
Other favourites of the round then include the Sydney Roosters who are short priced to hand the depleted Melbourne Storm outfit another loss at AAMI Park; and the Brisbane Broncos looking for their fourth win to hang onto their rising spot on the ladder playing the Canberra Raiders down in the cold at GIO Stadium on Monday night to finish off the round.
- Tip: Take Rabbitohs, Roosters and the Broncos in a multi-leg
