With Origin II less than a week away the split rounds of the 2014 NRL Telstra Premiership are back in Round 14 with just the five games on the cards this weekend.
Teams with a bye this week are: Manly Sea Eagles, North Queensland Cowboys, Cronulla Sharks and Brisbane Broncos.
That leaves 10 teams to fight it out in the pre-State Of Origin Game 2 round starting tonight with the South Sydney Rabbitohs playing the Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium where Queensland’s do-or-die decider against the Blues will be played next Wednesday night.
Upset Round 14 Tip: Melbourne Storm ($3) to defeat the Titans on Monday night
Friday June 13, 2014
South Sydney Rabbitohs ($1.33) v Wests Tigers ($3.35)
ANZ Stadium (7:45pm)
The Bunnies are clear favourites here after winning three on the trot, most recently enjoying a big 34 – 18 victory over the Warriors.
The Tigers also won last week by a far less comprehensive three points defeating the Knights 23 – 20.
Both sides have key players out this week but the Bunnies have revenge on their minds after losing to the Tigers back in Round 3 25 – 16.
It was a rough and tumble early season affair there with plenty of heavy knocks, concussions and on-reports stirring things up.
Souths play without Greg Inligs, Ben Teo’ and Chris McQueen while for the Tigers Aaron Woods and Robbie Farah are reporting to Origin duty.
With that in mind the Rabbitohs still look stronger and should salute for the favourite backers here.
- Tip: Souths to beat Wests Tigers by 8 points
Saturday June 14, 2014
Penrith Panthers ($1.20) v St George Illawarra Dragons ($4.75)
Sportingbet Stadium (5:30pm)
On Saturday night the ladder leading Penrith Panthers will look to extend their winning streak out to five straight when they jump shorties against the out-of-form St George Illawarra Dragons.
Benji Marshall did manage to show a bit of his old magic last round and lead the Dragons to a huge 30 – 0 win over the Sharks to end a lengthy drought, but they’re still at juicy odds to get the better of the big cats here.
Penrith were easy 36 – 14 winners over the Gold Coast last Friday and now sit equal on 12 points with the Bulldogs and Sea Eagles.
Here Jamie Soward faces his old club for the first time so expect him to be keener than ever for a big win to keep the good times rolling for his new club.
While the Dragons sleighed the Sharks last week, this is a different ball game so think they’ll have their confidence shattered again by the competition hotties.
- Tip: Panthers to beat the Dragons by 16 points
Saturday June 14, 2014
Sydney Roosters ($1.18) v Newcastle Knights ($5)
Allianz Stadium (7:30pm)
The other hot favourites in NRL betting for Saturday night are the fourth-ranked Sydney Roosters, big 32 – 12 winners over the depleted Melbourne Storm last Sunday at AAMI Park.
They play at Allianz Stadium against the Knights who are in a world of hurt sitting 15th on the ladder not having won since their victory over the Raiders back in Round 6.
Newcastle are the roughiest of the Round out over $5 to win, something that’s very unlikely with the Chooks in such red hot form racking up six wins from their last seven matches played as the reigning Premiers keep their eye on the prize again.
- Tip: Roosters to smash the Knights by 20 points
Sunday June 15, 2014
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs ($1.53) v Parramatta Eels ($2.60)
ANZ Stadium (3:00pm)
On Sunday afternoon things look a little closer with the Canterbury Bulldogs favourites over the Eels.
The two are both inside the top eight, the Doggies clearly sitting second behind the Panthers while Parramatta are looking to hang onto their eighth position after winning by two in a gritty game played over the Cowboys last Friday night.
A lot of the flare will be missing from this clash though with nearly the full NSW Blues backline coming out of these two squads.
The Eels are missing Jarryd Hayne again and history shows their record without him is pretty poor so sticking with the favourites here.
- Tip: Bulldogs to beat the Eels by 6 points
Monday June 16, 2014
Gold Coast Titans ($1.40) v Melbourne Storm ($3)
Cbus Super Stadium (7:00pm)
The final Round 14 match takes place two nights before Origin with the Titans favourites to defeat the hard-hit Melbourne Storm.
The Gold Coast may be looking down the barrel of five straight losses if they don’t bounce back here, but they’re still well liked to defeat a club torn apart by Origin and injuries.
Last week the Titans were handed a nasty 36 – 14 hiding by the top ranked Panthers and will be looking to atone here.
Melbourne meanwhile lost 32 – 12 at the hands of the Tri-Colours last Sunday so are also still nursing their egos.
Without the likes of Cooper Cronk (injury), Billy Slater and Greg Inglis these boys are in trouble.
That said the Gold Coast also must pick up some slack playing without co-captains Nate Myles and Greg Bird along with a number of others so it’s even missing-player wise.
It will be gritty, tough and come down to a mental battle and only a couple of points.
- Tip: Melbourne to beat the Titans by 2 points
