This weekend the first State of Origin-affected round of the 2015 NRL Telstra Premiership takes place and with eight teams on a bye there are just four scheduled games for you to enjoy a punt on.
The eight teams that get a rest and won’t feel the loss of their Origin representative players are: Melbourne Storm, St George Illawarra Dragons, Sydney Roosters, New Zealand Warriors, Penrith Panthers, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Gold Coast Titans and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
There are short-priced favourites in all four games with the teams at longer odds through Ladbrokes.com.au the most affected by the Origin camp call-ups.
But often this is when the real depth of the teams is felt and if the young guns and fill-ins can step up there could be good value throughout the NRL betting markets this weekend.
NRL Round 11 Draw
Friday May 22, 2015
South Sydney Rabbitohs ($1.48) vs Parramatta Eels ($2.70)
ANZ Stadium (7:45pm)
The sole Friday night clash sees the Bunnies, playing without superstar Greg Inglis (Maroons camp), host the Eels who are the only team keeping Manly out of the last spot on the ladder. Last weekend the Rabbitohs lost by four points to the Storm, their fourth loss from their past five played. While the loss of GI will be felt the replacement in Alex Johnston is a good one. Parra are racked by not only poor form and a shocking strike rate but also salary-cap breach issues and it is hard to see them rise to the occasion here.
Saturday May 23, 2015
Wests Tigers ($1.48) vs North Queensland Cowboys ($2.70)
Campbelltown Stadium (7:30pm)
The young Tigers lose their skipper Robbie Farah and one of the game’s best props Aaron Woods to the Blues camp and even with them their form has been so hit-and-miss. They are the shorties to win here however as the North Queensland line-up loses its backbone with Johnathan Thurston, James Tamou and Matt Scott all out. They’ll really feel that, especially JT, giving the Tigers a chance to strike and atone for their 22 – 12 loss to Newcastle in Round 10.
Sunday May 24, 2015
Canberra Raiders ($1.45) vs Canterbury Bulldogs ($2.80)
GIO Stadium (4:00pm)
Canberra went down 32 – 18 to the Dragons last week but are unaffected by State of Origin this round, a rare thing this time of year and one that has the odds tipped in their favour. The Bulldogs meanwhile come off a 24 – 10 loss to the Roosters and play without Josh Morris, Trent Hodkinson, Josh Jackson and David Klemmer. That is a notable quartet, especially Morris whose loss will stretch the Bulldogs backline.
Monday May 25, 2015
Newcastle Knights ($1.52) vs Brisbane Broncos ($2.60)
Hunter Stadium (7:00pm)
This is a must-win for the Knights and if they can’t do it against a Brisbane squad missing six big players – Darius Boyd, Justin Hodges, Sam Thaiday, Matt Gillett, Corey Parker and Josh McGuire – then they can be ruled out for the rest of the season for sure. Brisbane were brave against the Cowboys last week but couldn’t stop NQ from posting their seventh straight win, however the youngsters won’t have the same form at Hunter this week.
