This weekend we take a break from the 2016 NRL Telstra Premiership to enjoy the first representative round of the season headlined by Friday night’s Anzac Test between the Kangaroos and the Kiwis.
Rep Round Tip: Take total match points 37 – 47 @ $2.90 in the City v Country clash through Ladbrokes.com.au
The Australia vs New Zealand is an annual highlight on the Rugby League calendar and takes place tonight at Newcastle’s Hunter Stadium at 7:50pm (AEST).
The Roos have won all but two of the Anzac Tests and are the short-priced $1.18 favourites through Ladbrokes.com.au to win again this evening with their rivals out to $5.25 despite their success last year.
Scoring the 2015 upset was the first time New Zealand won the Anzac Test for over 15 years, but this year Steve Kearney’s Kiwis have a tough assignment in their bid to go back-to-back and post their fourth straight win against their Trans-Tasman rivals.
The Kiwi squad is a completely different looking side to last year, while the Kangaroos’ new coach Mal Meninga has named a pretty similar line-up.
One debutant for Australia hitting the headlines is Fijian flyer Semi Radradra who is $6.50 in the first try scorer markets.
The other Roos debutants are Josh McGuire (Broncos), Michael Morgan (Cowboys) and Blake Ferguson (Roosters).
New Zealand will suffer through a host of notable player withdrawals, explain their long odds for the win, and while there’s power in their forward pack it might not be potent enough.
The other major clash on the cards this weekend is the coveted City vs Country showdown taking place on Sunday afternoon at Scully Park in Tamworth.
As always, spots on the NSW Blues’ squad are up for grabs in the 25th edition of this match.
Country are on a roll not having lost to City in the three latest games played between these two, including a 2014 draw (26 all), and in an attempt to shake things off the underdogs have named six players who have played 20 or less NRL games.
That makes a bit of a mockery out of not only selection but the continuing relevance of this match.
Still, there’s a game to be played and the experienced city team, including Sharks pair James Maloney and Jack Bird in the halves, look hard to beat in a likely high-scoring affair.
Among the other International Tests are the Fiji vs PNG showdown and Tonga vs Samoa clashes taking place on Saturday night.
