2017 State Of Origin Game 3: Betting Preview

The State Of Origin 2017 series will be run and won on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium with a thrilling decider to be played out up in Brisbane between the mighty Queensland Maroons and the gallant New South Wales Blues.

In Game 1 the Blues totally upstaged the Queenslanders with a big 28 – 4 victory at the old Lang Park, their largest at the venue, before the comeback kings of Origin football made it one-all fighting back from a half-time deficit in Game 2 to returning to winning form in Sydney.

A showdown for the ages is now set for Game 3 and it is up to the home Queensland squad to hold off their rivals as the $2.15 underdogs in State Of Origin betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

2017 State Of Origin Game 3

  • Date: Wednesday July 12, 2017
  • Venue: Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane
  • Kick-Off: 8:16pm (AEST)
  • Odds: Queensland ($2.15) vs New South Wales ($1.75)

After the first half of State Of Origin Game 2 three weeks ago it looked like the Queensland dynasty was done and dusted, the ageing Maroons heading to the sheds 16 – 6 down.

The Blues totally dropped the ball when returning for the final 40 minutes however and gave away their big lead, eventually going down 18 – 16 with Johnathan Thurston kicking the winning conversion from the sidelines with just minutes left on the clock.

Thurston though is ruled out of the do-or-die decider, and the rest of the NRL season, due to his shoulder injury, and that major loss has seen the State Of Origin Game 3 odds on Queensland drift right out.

There has been a number of changes to the State Of Origin Queensland team for the decider, including also the absence of Darius Boyd who broke his thumb in Game 2.

There are now six Melbourne Storm players in the Maroons squad with Cameron Munster to play in the halves alongside the far more experience Cooper Cronk. Could this Storm spine be the winning formula for Queensland?

Also in for the Canetoads is Ben Hunt, out to handle the pressure better than he did for the Broncos in the 2015 NRL Grand Final.

The New South Wales State Of Origin team are also battling a few injury concerns, but as it stands they’ve named the exact squad for all three games for the first time since 1996.

State Of Origin Game 3: First Tryscorer

  • Valentine Holmes (QLD) – $10
  • Brett Morris (NSW) – $10
  • Dane Gagai (QLD) – $11
  • Blake Ferguson (NSW) – $11

Tip: Will Chambers First Tryscorer @ $17

On debut in Game 2, Valentine Holmes atoned for an early match knock-on to score the first four-pointer of the match and he’s the $10 favourite to do so again for Queensland. Dane Gagai scored the match-equalling try in the second showdown and is the next-best fancied for the home boys on Wednesday night. For New South Wales, winger Brett Morris is tipped as their most likely followed by Blake Ferguson.

All are chances and certainly wouldn’t be surprised if Holmes does it again, but the pressure is on in this must win for both teams and that will open up the play and the value in State Of Origin First Tryscorer markets.

Quite fancy Jarryd Hayne to be there looking to make an impact like he did in the series opener for NSW at $12, while $17 for Will Chambers in the centres for Queensland looks juicy.

State Of Origin Game 3: Man Of The Match Odds

  • Cameron Smith (QLD) – $7
  • James Tedesco (NSW) – $7
  • Cooper Cronk (QLD) – $11
  • James Maloney (NSW) – $11
  • Mitchell Pearce (NSW) – $11
  • Andrew Fifita (NSW) – $11

Smith and Tedesco for Queensland and New South Wales respectively are the obvious favourites in Man Of The Match State Of Origin betting, but there could be value to be had if another step forwards and puts in the game of the all games.

If Queensland hold off the assault then Cooper Cronk, playing in his 14th State Of Origin match, could be the best to handle the pressure and if his kicking game is on point he could prove value at $11.

Similarly, 14 Origin game veteran Mitchell Pearce is doing everything right (on and off the field for a change) and with his impressive try assists and line breaks statistics is also a nice bet at $11.
