The roots of the St George Dragons date all the way back to 1921. Though, the team as we know it today was established in the late 1990s. After the Super League debacle and the establishment of the NRL, the future of some of the rugby clubs was uncertain as the NRL was looking to pair the 20 teams down to 14. St George and Illawarra made the decision to join forces in order to ensure their safety in the newly formed league. The plan worked as the St George Dragons joined the NRL on 23 September 1998. Though their tactic saved the team, it meant the previous premierships won by the Dragons would not count toward the team’s total.
Previous to the two teams merging, the St George team was fairly dominant in the NSWRL. They won their first First Grade Premiership in 1941 after a long awaited defeat over the Eastern Suburbs, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that the team developed into a major success. From 1956 to 1980, the team heavily dominated the league as they took home 13 Premiership titles (that included four consecutive titles from ’56 to ’59) and 12 Minor Premiership titles. While the 1980s were mostly quiet for the Dragons, they did see a resurgence in the 1990s, particularly after the merge. The new St George Illawarra Dragons team was a success right from the start. They reached their first Grand Final in 1999 only to lose to the Melbourne Storm.
While they haven’t quite been able to repeat their earlier success, they have remained one of the NRL’s most popular clubs. 2010 is certainly shaping up to be their first Premiership win as they’re currently sitting at the top of the NRL ladder.
Emblem, Colours & Jerseys
The team’s official colours are red and white, which are used throughout their impressive team emblem. It’s one of the more detailed emblems of any NRL team as it features a shield with the silhouette of a horse-mounted knight behind a fearsome white dragon. The current home jerseys are mostly white with a red V that starts at the shoulders and runs to the middle of the chest. The shorts are white. The current away jerseys are mostly red with white accents along the sides and white hash marks crossing the chest. The shorts are red.
The St George Dragons play all of their home matches at WIN Jubilee Oval located in Kogarah. The stadium seats approximately 21,000 fans. It also serves as the team’s training location.
